The year 2008 was extraordinary because of the number of reports from
major clinical outcome trials of blood pressure (BP)-lowering
therapies. Consequently, this review of the past year in hypertension
will primarily focus on these clinical trials and their likely impact
on future treatment guidelines. However, there were also important
reports on the global burden of hypertension, recommendations for home
BP measurement, impact of nutritional factors on the incidence of
hypertension, resistant hypertension, and treatment strategies for
improving BP control in general.
